Chapter 35: R.I.P Jerry Bandits

“Wow, a woman bringing a kid to a place like this—pretty gutsy, huh?”

The bandit leader, Jerry, confidently stepped forward and jerked his chin.

“When someone talks to you, you should answer. Why’s a girl like you so stiff?”

At his unpleasantly commanding tone, the brown-haired woman’s lips twitched for a moment.

But almost instantly, her expression returned to normal, as if nothing had happened.

She stood silently, not offering a single word.

“Well, I don’t mind the hard-to-get type. Makes it more fun to break them.”

With that, Jerry grabbed the woman’s wrist and pulled her into his arms.

Then, a cold voice whispered by his ear.

“I like the thrill of breaking things too.”

“What?”

“I said, I like the thrill of breaking things.”

The woman paused briefly, then looked up at Jerry and smiled with bared teeth.

It was quite a chilling smile.

“What did this wench just say?”

“That I like breaking arrogant fools like you who don’t know their place.”

She spoke with an air of composure.

“There’s a certain pleasure in putting men like you in their place.”

“Hah!”

Jerry looked surprised for a moment, then turned to his men and burst into laughter.

“Puhaha! They say women from the capital are bold—and I guess it’s true!”

But his laughter didn’t last long.

The bandits, who had been chuckling along, fell silent the moment Jerry raised a hand.

“You know, a girl should know her place. If she gets uppity, it just pisses me off!”

Just as he reached to grab her by the hair—

The woman vanished before his eyes.

“W-what the—!”

“Too slow.”

He didn’t even have time to turn toward the voice behind him.

A sudden kick to the back of his knees sent Jerry sprawling face-first into the dirt.

The sting in his nose was nothing compared to the shame.

That he, the boss, had been knocked over by such a pathetic-looking woman.

Face red with humiliation, Jerry jumped up.

“Y-you little—!”

He swiftly pulled a dagger from his coat and lunged at her.

But for someone who called himself the leader of bandits, his skills were laughable.

Crunch—

With a sickening crack, the dagger fell to the ground.

“Aaaaargh—!”

Jerry shrieked as he gasped for air.

The woman had snapped his wrist with a single, graceful movement.

Seeing their leader foaming at the mouth and thrashing on the ground, the bandits started to panic.

Among them, the only one who remained calm was the mysterious woman.

“I told you, didn’t I? I like breaking things.”

Her gentle eyes curved into crescent moons.

“What’s wrong? Didn’t you say you liked breaking things too?”

The woman’s predatory gaze burned like a beast toying with prey.

The stunned bandits staggered back.

They didn’t even know why they were so afraid, only that their hands clutched their weapons tighter.

“Maybe you’re just too dumb to realize what’s happening. If it were me, I’d have run away by now.”

Her previously light tone had turned eerily cold.

But humans are weak to what they see.

Even after witnessing her take down their boss, the bandits couldn’t quite believe this frail-looking woman had done it.

Their instincts were screaming, but they hesitated.

“Crazy bitch! Think you’re tough?! Get her!”

Driven by the need to avenge their leader, the bandits charged.

“This is why idiots never live long.”

In the center of the screaming mob, Rachel Brown’s eyes glinted sharply.

Somehow, she already held the dagger she’d taken from Jerry.

“Told you—you wouldn’t live to see the end.”

The dagger moved like it belonged in her hand, slicing the air like a swallow in flight.

“Aaaaargh—!”

“Hrk—!”

Where the silver blade passed, only blood remained.

“Catch her! Grab her!”

“Too fast! What is she?!”

The bandits all rushed her at once.

But it was useless.

She was far faster than they were.

By then, five of the fifteen had already fallen to her blade.

“There!”

“W-where? Aaaagh—!”

One looked up at a comrade’s shout—only to see her, silhouetted against the sun, landing atop him.

Crack—

She snapped his neck without hesitation.

The others, seeing it happen up close, stumbled backward in terror.

“R-run!”

At someone’s shout, they finally came to their senses and turned to flee.

But it was already too late.

Their screams continued to echo through the mountain pass—

Until not a single one remained to scream.

“H-huff… Huff…”

Jerry, the leader of the bandits, stumbled backward as he looked at his men strewn across the ground—then fell on his rear.

Three minutes? Five minutes? No, not even that.

In almost an instant, the woman before him had taken down every one of his subordinates.

“M-monster…”

The woman, standing amid the ragged bandits, let out a snort at his words.

“It’s been a while since I’ve heard that.”

Jerry bit his lip and clenched his fists.

“You should’ve chosen your opponent more wisely. Should’ve caught on when I snapped your wrist.”

To think she had taken down fifteen men armed with nothing but a dagger.

He wanted to scream that it was absurd—but he couldn’t.

Because it had happened right before his very eyes.

But his men weren’t weaklings.

They were thugs hardened by years of street fights, and if they’d survived this long as bandits, they had their reasons.

And yet, all of them had been beaten by a single woman.

It was just too much to believe.

“Uuuurgh—!”

As the woman slowly approached him, Jerry was consumed by fear.

Though his men lay beaten and bloodied, the woman was as pristine as when she started.

Not even a wrinkle in her clothes after all that fighting.

As if she sensed his fear, the woman gave him a sweet smile.

“Don’t worry too much. They’re all still breathing.”

As if she had forgotten something, she added, “Ah, though if you don’t stop the bleeding soon, they might die. I did nick a few vital spots.”

“W-who the hell are you?!” Jerry shouted desperately.

The woman walked up and looked him in the eye.

Just meeting her green eyes made him feel paralyzed, like a nightmare pressing down on him.

“You really want to know who I am?”

She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear and tilted her head.

“Then I’ll tell you.”

The woman, who looked ever so kind, turned her back to him and said—

“I’m a nanny.”

Whack—

Jerry lost consciousness from a spinning kick to the temple.

The last word he heard was a completely baffling one—‘nanny.’

Good thing they weren’t that skilled.

Suppressing my ragged breathing, I wiped the sweat from my chin.

‘As expected. I still can’t handle large groups.’

Compared to my previous body, my stamina and strength were pitiful.

Frustrating, but what could I do? This wasn’t even my original body.

Still, if I hadn’t been training every night, I wouldn’t have even been able to fight back, let alone survive.

As I turned to leave, a troublesome sight came into view.

“Great.”

I stared blankly at the coachman slumped over the box seat.

A long arrow was lodged in his chest.

The bandits must’ve killed him to stop the carriage.

But an even greater problem was waiting.

“What happened here?”

Edwin, whom I had knocked out earlier, had woken up.

His wide eyes were filled with shock and fear.

“Your Highness, are you alright?”

“Who are these people? Why are they all lying there like that?”

“They appear to be bandits from this area. I don’t think they’re dead—just unconscious.”

“G-good heavens.”

Edwin grabbed my arm after spotting the blood on the ground.

“Are you okay? Who did all this?”

Holding his temple, he shook his head as if in pain.

“I—I was definitely awake, and then suddenly I felt something hit the back of my neck… and then I don’t remember anything.”

“The carriage came to a sudden stop—you probably hit your head.”

“Is that what happened?”

“Don’t you remember? We both rolled out of the carriage when it jolted to a stop.”

“I don’t… I don’t remember anything.”

Good. Better that he didn’t remember.

I patted his shoulder with a calm face. “I passed out too. When I came to, everything outside was already like this.”

Edwin looked up at me, still frightened. “Um… shouldn’t we turn back? I’ve got a really bad feeling about this.”

“We’ve come too far to give up now.”

“But—!”

I pulled him toward the carriage again.

“See?! You just do whatever you want—!”

“Luxen Village is just a little further. If we want to return before sunset, we have to hurry.”

The sun was already high overhead.

There wasn’t much time left.

After laying the coachman’s body on the ground, I took the box seat.

“Hyah—!”

With a snap of the reins, the two horses neighed loudly.

The carriage set off once more—bound for Luxen Village.
