The last war against the heretics occurred a hundred years ago.

Kayden claimed he fought against heretics. A man only twenty years old.

Which could only mean one thing…

I reached a clear conclusion.

“That guy’s actually insane.”

“Wait, that’s your conclusion?”

“How else am I supposed to explain it?”

Apparently, Sher didn’t agree with my logic.

“Well, according to the intel I’ve gathered, Prince Kayden is rather cold-headed and rational… In any case, he’s not the type who fits the label ‘insane.'”

“But Kayden told me himself. That he took part in a war against heretics.”

“…Maybe he is insane.”

But after hearing me out, even Sher tilted his head and murmured.

After a moment of collecting his thoughts, he said, “Well, understood. I’ll look into Prince Kayden’s past more thoroughly, based on what you’ve told me. Ex-lovers, childhood roommates—even his first nanny. I’ll dig up everything.”

Then, glancing at me, he cautiously asked, “So, Lady Bella. Since you did make a request… is there anything you’ll be giving me?”

“Ah, don’t worry. I’ll pay you properly.”

Since Sher is an informant, paying with information rather than money is probably better.

I mulled it over and recalled a rather useful piece of intel.

“I’ll pay you in information.”

“Ah, but I’d prefer cash—”

“Gabby has an inferiority complex about his appearance.”

“Huh? That can’t be…”

“Don’t believe me?”

He didn’t have the courage to answer outright, but from the look on Sher’s face, it was obvious what he was thinking.

Impudent Sher. How dare you doubt me?

I added a more detailed explanation, “Gabby doesn’t like Kayden. He growls every time he sees him. Why do you think that is? Clearly, it’s because Kayden is more attractive than he is.”

“I don’t think that’s it…”

I casually ignored Sher’s words and continued, “It wouldn’t be a bad idea to spread the rumor: the Empire’s most beautiful man is none other than Gabby. He’s like a lily…”

I pictured Gabby’s face. He really didn’t suit a lily at all, with that scowling expression.

Then what flower would suit better?

After some thought, I chose one that matched his hair color.

“He’s a beauty like a black rose. Let’s spread the nickname far and wide—‘The Black Rose of House Dunkeld.’”

“…Still doesn’t seem right, but it is amusing.”

Sher hesitated a bit before asking me, “Lady Bella, did you fight with the Young Duke of Dunkeld or something? You two don’t get along, right?”

“Hm? Not at all. We get along quite well.”

“Then how could you do something so cruel—Lady Bella, you really are a born demon.”

“Was that a compliment?”

It sounded like praise, but somehow it felt like an insult.

At that moment—

Kkamang!

The closed door suddenly flew open and Blackie bounded into the room.

He wagged his tail happily at the sight of me, but I frowned when I saw what he was carrying in his mouth.

Sher’s reaction was the same.

“Lady Bella, what is Blackie holding right now?”

“A stag’s head. Yesterday, Gabby came to me out of nowhere and said he wanted to offer his game as a gift…”

“Hey, this is a present. I’ll prep the leftover hide and send it to you later.”

“…This is a present?”

“Of course it is! Don’t you think you’d look pretty cool carrying this around? People will be super jealous of you!”

“If I saw someone walking around with a deer head, I’d get out of there immediately.”

He just shoved the head into my hands. Said to mount it on the wall or something.

And now, that deer head had become Blackie’s toy. It had only been a day, but watching him trot around with it was giving me a headache.

I addressed Blackie as gently as I could, “Blackie. We’re having an important conversation. Come back a little later.”

Kkamang.

“And that hideous—no, that deer head, could you please get rid of it…”

Kkamang!

“You really like it that much? Fine. Do what you want.”

Blackie dashed out of the room again, tail wagging excitedly, still holding that grotesque thing in his mouth.

It looked like I’d have to watch him carry that thing around for a while.

Just thinking about it made me feel even more annoyed at Gabby for giving me such a monstrosity as a gift in the first place.

Sher glanced sideways at me and said, “Ah, I think I get it now, Lady Bella. This is revenge for the deer head, isn’t it?”

“Well, you could put it that way. Anyway, can you do it? Spreading that rumor about Gabby.”

“An informant is supposed to refuse jobs that don’t pay… but no demon could say no to something this entertaining. I will certainly carry out your command, Lady Bella.”

Judging by the expression on his face, he seemed quite satisfied. He must have really liked the information I gave him.

That’s the conclusion I reached internally.

***

“This drink tastes really good.”

I took a sip and set the cup down.

Right now, Jessie, Nigel, and I were at a café, enjoying some drinks.

More precisely, it was my café.

I had only learned of its existence yesterday.

Sher hadn’t been able to determine the exact whereabouts of the angels. However, he did share this bit of information:

The common trait among the places where angels were spotted was that they were all crowded. Maybe they were looking for someone in the Middle Realm.

So I figured that if we observed a place with high foot traffic for a few days, we might get lucky and spot an angel.

But where would be a good place to discreetly observe people?

Jessie, having overheard me muttering, offered a suggestion.

“Um, miss. How about that place?”

“That place?”

“Your shop!”

“Wait, I had a shop?”

That’s right. A little while ago, the Duke handed over a few shops managed by the family to me.

Since then, so many incidents had happened that I’d completely forgotten about it.

Among those shops was a four-story building on the busiest street in the capital.

The whole building was a café. It mainly sold high-end desserts and was always bustling with customers.

To think this shop was mine. Well, strictly speaking, it belonged to Isabella.

Still, even if only temporarily, I hadn’t known such a shop was mine!

Anyway, as Jessie had said, it was an ideal place to observe passersby.

I ordered the fourth floor to be cleared, and the three of us began observing the street from there.

A teacup in one hand and a dessert in the other.

I watched the people below at a leisurely pace.

In contrast, Jessie had been tense ever since she heard we were looking for someone, scanning every passerby intently.

Her lips gradually dried out from nervousness, and she finally asked me, “So, miss, what does the person we’re looking for look like?”

“I don’t know what they look like. But I’ll know them when I see them.”

Angels have distinct characteristics.

In short—

“They have a punchable face.”

“Huh?”

“You’ll know when you see them. The one with the most punchable face—that’s who I’m looking for.”

“Come on, you’re joking, right?”

Jessie clearly didn’t believe me. I glanced at Nigel, urging him to back me up.

Reading my look, Nigel nodded and said, “Well, this time Bella’s right. They do have a striking aura. More than anything, they give off this air of superiority… like they look down on everyone around them. Something like that.”

“No way. How could you tell just from that—huh?”

Jessie pointed toward someone walking down the main street.

The moment I followed her finger, I knew instantly: that was the one I was looking for.

A deeply furrowed brow. And when a human came too close, he blatantly pinched his nose shut.

That kind of attitude—yet in stark contrast, his face was truly angelic.

One distinctive trait of angels was the perfect symmetry of their faces. If you split it vertically, the left and right sides were a perfect match.

Most angels had beautiful appearances.

But that eerie balance in their features gave them an unnatural feel, making it hard to see them as living beings.
