Monsters could feel pain too.

I stared coldly at the monster writhing on the ground.

“If you had a head, you should have run the moment you saw me.”

Well, in fact, the monster had tried to flee the moment it saw me. It only hesitated for a second.

“But now, that useless head of yours is about to be gone.”

With those words, I aimed a precise kick at the monster’s head.

Of course, an ordinary person’s kick would have done nothing. But with demonic power infused in my strike, the force crushed the monster to the ground in an instant.

—Spare me.

Unable to withstand the pain, the monster opened its mouth and spoke.

What?

The moment I heard those words, fire roared up inside me.

How dare you?

“You understood me perfectly well, and yet you pretended not to?”

It ignored me? A monster?

Soon after, the monster ceased moving altogether. It was dead.

Without hesitation, I tore the monster’s head from its body and lifted it to my eye level for a closer look.

Thick, black liquid oozed from the shredded flesh.

My hand was stained black with the monster’s blood, but I paid it no mind.

The monster was so massive that its head alone was heavy in one hand.

Had it been the soldiers and not me facing this creature, it would have taken at least ten of them to bring it down.

This would make quite the gift, wouldn’t it?

I turned the monster’s head this way and that, examining it.

Black blood splattered in every direction.

A few drops landed on my face, and I frowned slightly.

Then.

I suddenly felt eyes on me and looked around.

The three mercenary brothers were staring at me with expressions of shock.

Even for mercenaries, was this too much of a sight to handle?

No. More than that, weren’t there four eyes watching, not three?

I shifted my gaze toward a soldier hiding behind a tree, spying on us.

“Eek!”

So startled, the soldier forgot to hide his presence and let out a scream.

I tilted my head slightly.

The emblem engraved on the soldier’s armor was…

“He’s from the Silveron camp.”

Gray spoke urgently to me.

Hm.

This was troublesome. Of course, I had planned to bring the monster’s head as a gift when I presented myself to the Silveron camp.

But to be caught in the act of hunting it.

I imagined for a moment how I must have looked through that soldier’s eyes.

Hardly angelic. On top of that, I was drenched in monster’s blood.

Not exactly the appearance of someone impersonating an angel.

It seemed I wasn’t the only one who thought so.

“Shall I deal with him?” Gray asked, hand resting on his hilt.

I shook my head. Deal with him? Why take a life over something so trivial?

That thought made me frown as I looked at Gray.

Why was it that I was the demon, and yet he was acting more demonic than me?

Meanwhile, the soldier turned and fled without looking back.

I simply stood there, watching his figure grow smaller in the distance.

Gray removed his hand from his sword and asked me, more statement than question.

“Miss Bella, you don’t take human lives lightly, do you?”

“I’m not a monster. Why would I indulge in useless slaughter?”

“I only thought so because you said you were a demon’s contractor. If you received power from a demon, I wondered if perhaps you no longer saw us as fellow humans.”

Hm.

It wasn’t because of that. It was simply that as a demon, humans didn’t appear to me as equals.

But apart from that, I was cautious about taking lives. Especially human ones.

I had never enjoyed staining my hands with more blood than necessary.

And then.

A memory from the past surfaced in my mind.

“Bella. Let me give you a word of advice.”

“Why should I listen to advice from the likes of you?”

“My, my. Listen to our youngest talk. Just like a proper demon now, isn’t she? Our little one’s all grown up into a demon, huh? Come here, let me pinch those cheeks!”

“Ugh. Get lost, you idiot.”

I shuddered briefly at the unpleasant memory.

Five hundred years ago. Back when I was traveling with Zachary.

Belial had originally intended to kill Zachary and drag me back to the Demon Realm. But upon seeing Zachary, on a whim, he let us go.

And afterward, he gave me that advice.

“Bella. Don’t forget that humans think differently from us. What’s natural to us can be a terrible shock to them.”

“What do you mean?”

“If you want your contractor to stay by your side, don’t kill humans recklessly. And if you see one dying, don’t just turn away.”

“Don’t spout nonsense. Why would I listen to something like that?”

“Because if you act human, then that human will stay with you for a long, long time. Got it?”

Looking back now, maybe Belial’s advice had come from his own experience. After all, I had heard that Belial once had a human lover long ago.

I shrugged my shoulders. Well, it didn’t seem like such an important point anyway.

Still, it seemed his words had lodged somewhere in my unconscious.

At the time, I laughed it off, but after hearing it, I had indeed become cautious about taking human lives.

Unless they truly deserved to die, I never laid a hand on them.

I finished my thoughts and began brushing dirt from the monster’s head.

“Is that supposed to be the gift?”

At Gray’s question, I nodded.

Gray’s expression began to harden.

“Miss Bella? No matter how I look at it, that doesn’t seem like something you could call a gift…”

“Hm. I agree.”

“…Really?”

“Yes. A gift should at least be nicely wrapped. Do you happen to have a ribbon?”

Considering human sentiment, packaging was important.

But Gray clearly didn’t share my opinion.

“Better not to do it at all. That’s a hideous…”

Gray shook his head vehemently, shuddering.

***

The moment we arrived at the Silveron camp, a commotion broke out.

Well, of course.

Three brawny mercenaries, and a woman holding a monster’s head in one hand—how could that not cause a stir?

We were immediately escorted to the tent of the vice commander.

Or rather than escorted, dragged might have been the better word.

The vice commander was a middle-aged man with a stiff expression.

He sat at his desk, rubbing his forehead as he tried to process what I had just said.

“So you’re telling me you’re an angel? And not just any angel, but Archangel Isabella? Haah?”

He wasn’t such a fool as to believe my words outright.

Smiling, I tossed the monster’s head onto his desk.

With a heavy thud, it landed squarely on the table. At the impact, the remaining blood spattered in every direction.

“I even brought you a gift, and yet you won’t show me proper hospitality? Humans really are lacking in sincerity.”

At each word I spoke, the faces of the three mercenaries beside me grew paler.

Come to think of it, before we entered the Silveron camp—

“Miss Bella. To people, an archangel is seen as a merciful and wise being.”

“Call me Hyungnim. And why say such a thing? Are you trying to claim I’m not merciful or wise?”

“Everyone has their own strengths. It seems mercy and wisdom were not among those given to you, Miss Bella—no, Hyungnim.”

“Just because you phrase it politely doesn’t make it any less insulting. You insolent human.”

That was the exchange Gray and I had just had.

But he wasn’t wrong, so I couldn’t deny it.

I wasn’t stupid, so perhaps I could manage wisdom. But mercy? That was impossible for me to imitate.

So what was left? To simply act as I normally would.

First, intimidate the opponent.

“I tore that monster’s head apart with my bare hands. Do you think a human could have done that?”

At my words, the vice commander examined the monster’s head carefully.

As I had said, the torn flesh showed the ragged marks of being ripped apart by hand.

Realizing this, the vice commander’s expression twisted into something complicated.

“Certainly, that’s not the kind of strength a human would possess. But you say you’re an angel?”

“Yes.”

“Not a demon?”

“An angel.”

“Really an angel?”

“Yes. I am an angel.”

And then, push forward regardless.

I held my head high, my face full of confidence.
