I froze on the spot for a moment. If I were to interpret what Silia had just told me…

“So the reason I was born is because…”

“Gabriel needed someone to die in place of his lover. That someone is you.”

Silia completed the sentence I hadn’t been able to finish.

Nigel had once told me this long ago.

Prophecies that foresee the future are imperfect.

Silia added an explanation, “The future I see is not perfect. I only saw that the Lord of Contract would die, but I couldn’t see whether that Lord was Uriel or you, child.”

I slowly blinked. Just earlier, Nigel had told me that Gabriel was my father.

At the time, I hadn’t gotten the chance to ask why Gabriel had brought me into this world, but so this is the reason.

When I fell silent, Silia slightly tilted her head. “Hmm, is that a difficult thing for you to understand, child?”

She said that and snapped her fingers.

Then, two dolls appeared in the air above the table.

The dolls, about the size of my palm, looked like puppets but moved on their own without anyone controlling them.

“What are these?”

“I understand children like things like this.”

“Do I look like someone who’d like dolls?”

I couldn’t hide my bewildered expression.

Silia just gave a small smile and got to the main point.

“Then I’ll kindly explain from the beginning for you, child. These two dolls here. Ah, my mistake. Even though you’re watching, I forgot to dress them. What an embarrassing mistake for an adult.”

But both dolls are wooden and genderless?

I looked at Nigel, who was silently standing next to me.

Your chieftain really might be a little off in the head.

Though he clearly understood my gaze and the meaning behind it, Nigel stubbornly refused to meet my eyes, as if he didn’t want to admit it.

Even so, maybe because he was embarrassed by the chieftain’s behavior, his ears started to turn red.

Regardless, Silia flicked her fingers as if scattering powder above the dolls.

Then, one doll was dressed in a voluminous dress with lace, and the other was dressed in a splendid uniform adorned with golden embroidery.

“Now, let’s say this one is Uriel and this one is Gabriel. They were lovers from long ago. Even the passage of time couldn’t quell the fiery love between them. Their passion was so intense… Do you know what happened fifty thousand years ago? The two of them—”

Contrary to her appearance, Silia was talkative.

“—Chieftain! Just the main point. Please stick to the main point.”

Nigel cut her off, as if used to this.

“Ah. Look at me. I must have gotten a bit excited after seeing you again, child.”

With that, Silia got to the point.

“The prophecy. The beginning of all this was the prophecy I gave. Gabriel, who didn’t want to lose his lover, came up with a solution. It was a truly terrible idea.”

Silia stared at the two dolls on the table for a moment.

“Gabriel began to whisper sly words to his lover. He said he wanted a child with her. Uriel, who loved her partner, agreed easily.”

Then, a third doll appeared. It wore the same dress as the doll symbolizing Uriel, but was slightly smaller.

I asked Silia, “But how was that even possible? Angels, like demons, don’t have the power of creation.”

It was a question I’d had since earlier when Nigel told me that Gabriel was my father.

Angels couldn’t have children either. So for me to be the child of two archangels, a tremendous cost in causality had to be paid.

“To bring about your birth, Gabriel gave up a portion of his divine power, and Uriel gave up half of her contract power. Those are what make up you now. On top of that, there was help from the Celestial God.”

At Silia’s words, I recalled what the Celestial God had once said to me.

“I’ve been watching you because your birth was interesting.”

At the time, I hadn’t understood why he had said that.

But now, with what I had just learned, I finally understood.

It truly is something worth finding interesting. A being that was never supposed to be born. A demon born under two angels.

I began asking Silia the questions that still lingered in my mind.

“Didn’t you say Gabriel’s divine power makes up my body? But I’m a demon. I don’t have divine power.”

“That was Uriel’s doing. Before you were even born, that is, when you were still in the womb. That’s when Uriel discovered Gabriel’s scheme. Wanting to protect you, she deliberately tainted you with demonic energy. Since you were a demon, at least until you reached maturity, you’d be under Lilith’s protection.”

Silia said this and tapped the smallest doll on the table.

The doll’s wood turned pitch black, just like my magic.

In some ways, it was a relief. If I had been born a conservative, hypocritical angel… The thought alone was horrifying.

I asked the next question, “…So I have only half of her power.”

If Uriel gave me half of her power, then…

At my words, Silia laughed and lightly tapped the bridge of my nose. “That’s right. Just like Uriel, you will never be able to fully wield that immense power. But so what? You’ve lived well until now without knowing that, so just keep living as you always have, forgetting it.”

To a being from the Demon Realm, where only the strong survive, to live forgetting that my power was actually incomplete?

I ground my teeth in frustration. “If my power were complete, couldn’t I defeat Gabriel by force right now?”

“Hmm. You dream big, child.”

At my question, Silia chuckled softly.

After a brief thought, Silia added, “Let’s just say it’s because you’re still young, child. Maybe in a hundred thousand years? Ask me again then.”

Even if I could live for eternity, a hundred thousand years? She must be joking.

She could’ve just said there’s no way for me to overpower Gabriel.

Anyway.

I looked at the dolls on the table.

Two dolls wearing the same dress. Anyone would think they looked like a mother and daughter.

I had never wished for anything like parents. But seeing that scene made me feel strange.

According to Silia, Uriel had cherished me very much. But those words didn’t resonate with me.

Without taking my eyes off the dolls, I asked Silia, “So Uriel. How much did she know about this situation?”

“Didn’t I tell you? If Uriel had known what Gabriel was planning, she never would have agreed.”

Silia breathed her energy toward the table.

Then, as if responding to Silia’s will, the dolls began to move in earnest.

The doll symbolizing Uriel approached the one symbolizing Gabriel…

Whack—!

After kicking it harshly once, the Uriel doll picked up the small doll next to it and began to flee.

That small doll symbolized me…

Silia smiled brightly and said, “Once Uriel discovered Gabriel’s true intentions, she fled from him to protect you and entrusted herself to me. And you were born in this village. You were a very loud baby from your first cry.”

“……”

“Child, Uriel cared for you far more than you think. If she had stayed still, Gabriel would’ve soiled his own hands to save her life. But Uriel didn’t do that. It means you were more precious to her than her own life.”

“…I see.”

I barely managed to squeeze out a reply. That someone I didn’t even know had cared for me so much just because I was her child.

To me, emotions like that were unfamiliar. I was more used to anger and hatred.

I forced down the emotions that welled up to my throat. I couldn’t show such an unsightly display, could I?

Feigning calm, I asked Silia the next question, “Uriel. Where is she now?”

“She’s dead.”

Silia spoke concisely. Her demeanor was quite composed for someone talking about the death of a close friend.

Perhaps Silia had already come to terms with Uriel’s death long ago.

The fact that Uriel was dead once again stirred strange emotions in me.

Never once in my life had I thought I might have parents.

In truth, I had only now learned that I did.

One was dead, and the other was a despicable bastard I didn’t want anything to do with.

Might as well have none.

I clicked my tongue inwardly.
