The tall ceiling of the cathedral began to glow gold. Then a blinding light struck down from the sky.

A cluster of light gathered and took the form of a figure.

It was none other than Archangel Gabriel.

His two wings were spread wide, and his eyes swept calmly and deeply across the inside of the cathedral.

Gabriel descended gracefully into the cathedral. Wherever his feet touched, the surface rippled as if he were stepping on water.

The descent of the archangel was a rare sight that the nobles of the Empire could witness only once a year.

Those who were not invited each year might never get another chance. So in this moment, there were likely very few who did not feel awe at the sight of Gabriel.

But I was different.

‘Why the dramatic entrance?’

I clicked my tongue inwardly. What’s with that halo, and what’s the point of descending with wings?

Sure, angels could indeed fly with those wings… but was there really a need to fly in?

That guy could definitely have walked in. And yet he insisted on using his wings instead of his perfectly fine feet. Does he think he’s a bird?

Absolutely ridiculous.

I frowned as I looked at Gabriel’s face for the first time in a while.

Though I hated to admit it, most angels had beautiful appearances.

And Gabriel was no exception.

But in the eyes of a demon like me, he had a face I wanted to spit on immediately.

Angels typically had holy appearances. For a demon, just looking at them was enough to make one feel ill.

Still, to be face-to-face with Gabriel like this.

I felt a strange emotion. Of course, I had expected to see Gabriel at today’s event. But seeing him with my own eyes…

Well, it was a good thing. If a different archangel had shown up, I would’ve yelled at them to drag Gabriel here, even if it meant biting off their wings.

Until now, I had never met Gabriel alone. There had always been other demons or angels nearby.

So when his eyes pierced through me, I involuntarily flinched.

I didn’t want to admit it… but even now, I could feel it.

An insurmountable gap existed between the two of us.

‘Get a grip, Bella. Don’t let it show.’

I silently repeated the words to calm my increasingly rapid heartbeat as I looked around.

Inside the cathedral, the air buzzed with the excitement of those who had just witnessed the descent of the archangel.

Most stared at Gabriel with eyes full of longing.

Well.

He was an archangel. A being who could wield powers beyond human comprehension.

Someone who could change an entire human life with just the flick of a finger.

I spotted Gabby and the duke among the crowd.

Should I call it a relief?

Their expressions as they looked at Gabriel were indifferent.

If either of them had gazed at Gabriel like the others, I would’ve felt a decent amount of bitterness.

My gaze shifted past Gabby and the duke.

Kayden was staring at Gabriel as if entranced.

And I saw it. The tears welling in Kayden’s eyes.

He said he had never met Gabriel before, and yet he reacted like that.

I could now be certain. Behind Zachary’s unnatural reincarnation was Gabriel.

Come to think of it.

The moment I registered again that Kayden was here, I swallowed hard.

Now what?

When I first realized Gabriel had descended to the Middle Realm, I had managed to stay calm.

But it didn’t take long for my emotions to change.

Gabriel had always shown killing intent toward me.

If he were to attack seriously right now, how long could I last?

More importantly, what about Gabby and the duke? And Kayden?

But I steeled myself once more. There was no backing down now.

“…Isabella.”

Gabriel spoke while looking at me. The fact that he wasn’t surprised to see me meant he had known I’d be here.

Gabriel looked around.

Wherever his gaze fell, gasps of admiration followed.

He swept his eyes indifferently across the cathedral and murmured, almost to himself, “Too many uninvited guests.”

And.

The moment those words left his lips, complete silence fell inside the cathedral.

Startled, I looked around.

It was as if time had stopped. Everyone except Gabriel and me was frozen.

My eyes turned to Gabby and the duke. They, too, were frozen like statues.

Seeing the lifelessness in their eyes, I clenched my teeth and growled, “What the hell are you doing?”

“It’s been a while, Isabella.”

Gabriel didn’t answer my question.

Instead, he looked at me with eyes full of an emotion I couldn’t describe and said those words.

It was an unexpected reaction.

Considering the killing intent he had often directed at me, it wouldn’t have been strange if he attacked the moment he saw me.

And yet here he was, so composed.

Gabriel said, “I’ve always wanted to speak with you alone like this.”

His words were contradictory.

This place was full of humans. Even if he had temporarily sealed their senses, to act as if they didn’t exist.

To think he was more dismissive of humans than even I, who constantly referred to them as worthless.

I asked Gabriel, “What did you just do?”

“I merely put the uninvited guests to sleep for a moment.”

I looked around again.

It was a bizarre sight. All the humans around me were frozen stiff like stone.

But as Gabriel said, they were only temporarily asleep. Their lives weren’t in danger.

Relieved, I let out a sigh and said to Gabriel, “I rather liked the distance we had. I guess you didn’t feel the same. Coming all the way down to the Middle Realm like this.”

“Isn’t this a chance to speak with you without Lilith’s interference? For the past five hundred years, I’ve waited for the moment you’d leave the Demon Realm… To think you’d end up in the Middle Realm, and trapped in a human body, no less.”

Hearing Gabriel’s words, I was certain.

Those two lackeys had rushed to him and told him I was in the Middle Realm.

I made a mocking expression and said, “For someone so eager, you found out pretty late, didn’t you? It’s been months since I came to the Middle Realm.”

The seasons had changed twice. And yet he didn’t know I was here?

Angels really are pathetic.

Reading my expression, Gabriel began to offer an excuse that didn’t sound like one.

“The Middle Realm still belongs to the Beastkin. Besides, she… is still angry with me. That’s why our influence in the Middle Realm is limited.”

She? Who was this “she” Gabriel referred to?

But before I could ask, Gabriel spoke again.

“You may not know this, but from the moment you were born—no, even before that, you were always important to me.”

Gabriel said to me.

What?

I burst out laughing in disbelief.

Important?

What an unpleasant expression.

Curling one corner of my mouth, I replied, “I didn’t know people in the Celestial Realm attached such meaningful words to those they despise.”

“I do not hate you. It’s just… that circumstances turned out this way.”

“I didn’t know angels were capable of lying.”

I dismissed Gabriel’s words as nonsense.

Of course I did. He said he didn’t hate me?

After all the times he had shown killing intent toward me, to say something like that?

Even Belial passing by would scoff at that.

On top of that, after what he did to my contractor, he dares say this?

But.

Gabriel’s green eyes, as he spoke those words, pierced through me.

Now that I looked again… Gabriel’s eyes had a faint blue tint to them.

A familiar color. My eyes were the same shade.

Suddenly, I felt a strange sensation.

Snapping out of my thoughts, I clenched my teeth. Today would not end in a peaceful meeting.

“Then tell me. If you don’t hate me, why did you do what you did to me?”

There were many meanings in that question.

“……”

Gabriel didn’t answer immediately and simply looked at me.

Eyes just like mine stared back at me. It felt strange.

After a long pause, Gabriel finally opened his mouth.

“Every being is born for a reason. I simply wished for you to fulfill that reason.”

“The reason I was born?”

“Yes. You were born to stop the Demon God.”

“What kind of nonsense is that…”

I couldn’t understand what Gabriel was saying.

That I was born to stop the Demon God?

In that moment.

I recalled the mural I had seen in the abandoned cathedral. The one depicting the Lord of Contract who stopped the Demon God and met their end as a result.

But I wasn’t that person.

As if reading my mind, Gabriel opened his mouth again.

“Yes. You were originally destined to die while stopping the Demon God.”
