If the Demon God is released from the seal, not only I—but…

Everyone in the Middle Realm would die. There’s no one now to stop him.

Gabby and the Duke’s faces flashed through my mind. Though I’d never even spoken with her, Isabella came to mind as well.

All the more reason to find Gabriel and uncover the truth of that day.

If I’m going to stop the Demon God’s release.

“Saintess.”

Kayden called me once again.

Only then did I turn my head toward him.

His expression looked conflicted. A mix of emotions swirled on his face, making it harder to read than when it was blank.

I asked him, “Why did you call me?”

“According to what you’ve said, Saintess… a god loving a human is foolish.”

“Isn’t that obvious?” I answered Kayden’s question.

“Why is that obvious?”

Kayden’s reply carried an emotion I had never seen from him before.

Perhaps anger.

Or helplessness.

I answered him again, “Because humans are endlessly small, and gods are endlessly vast.”

Even if humans are wounded, it lasts a mere hundred years.

But we live with those wounds for tens of thousands of years—perhaps eternity.

That’s why it’s foolish.

Why take such a risk?

Wouldn’t it be better if from the beginning…

“I still don’t understand why that’s a problem,” Kayden said, nearly bursting with frustration.

I raised an eyebrow and responded, “Your fleeting moment does not equal the eternity of a god. A god who loves a human while bearing that cost is surely a fool.”

“But if their hearts connect—”

That was the last straw for my already thin patience.

“Don’t be annoying, human. Even if you’re a prince or a holy knight, you are still nothing before a god. Because your essence can never escape the limits of humanity.”

“……”

“What kind of god in their right mind would love a worthless human?”

Kayden looked at me without a word. His eyes held a weight of emotion.

But it wasn’t directed at me. It felt like he was seeing someone else through me.

I drove the point in. “The love that would be your highest glory… is a downfall for a god.”

Because that’s what it was for me.

If I had never met Zachary, I would never have felt emotions that could be shaken by another.

I wouldn’t have known what betrayal felt like. Or the despair of floundering endlessly.

Even now, five hundred years later—

I wouldn’t still be living with these aching feelings.

“……”

“……”

We stared at each other in silence for a while.

A heavy stillness passed between us.

It was Kayden who broke it.

“You may have already heard… but the High Priest suspects your true identity.”

“……”

“Be careful.”

With that, Kayden turned and left.

I silently watched his retreating figure.

***

A few days later.

While reading in my room at the Duke’s estate, I remembered what happened a few days ago.

“That insolent human.”

I ground my teeth.

Still fuming, I threw my book.

After that argument in the rose garden, Kayden vanished completely from the Duke’s estate.

He’d occasionally left before to handle temple matters, but this time, he was truly gone.

The room we had given him in the mansion was cleared out completely.

Gabby saw this and praised me.

“Tch, our little scoundrel. What did you say to finally drive that clingy guy away?”

“Quiet, Gabby.”

“Tsk. I mean, it’s kind of embarrassing to say, but moments like this… don’t we really feel like siblings? I’m pretty good at getting rid of people too, you know.”

He was clearly referring to the High Priest who left the estate days ago with a fed-up look on his face.

Curious what Gabby had done to make even that gentle priest flee, I asked the Duke…

He simply shook his head without a word.

In any case.

The mansion was the same as ever after Kayden left.

He’d always been quiet and didn’t like to make his presence known.

So I should have felt nothing—but…

“Jen. Bring me a book.”

At my command, the male Jen picked up the books I had thrown across the room one by one and brought them before me.

I started hurling the books toward the wall again.

“Haa.”

I let out a sigh that felt like it could burst.

If this were the Demon Realm, I would’ve gone to pick a fight with one of the demons I didn’t like to blow off some steam…

But trapped in a human body, I couldn’t do that, and it made me furious.

Not knowing exactly why I was so angry only made it worse.

Most likely, Kayden was the reason I felt this miserable…

The fact that a mere human had upset me—that alone added fuel to my fury.

In the end, I spiraled into an endless cycle of rage, my mood sinking past rock bottom and drilling through the floor.

Just then—

“Bella? What’s going on in here? Why’s the room feel like this?”

Nigel, showing his face for the first time in days, opened the door and walked in.

He glanced around and then noticed the pale-faced angels.

“Bella, what did you do to them—wait. What’s with your face?”

Nigel paused as he looked at me.

“What about my face?”

“You look like you’re about to kill someone. I didn’t think Isabella’s face was even capable of showing that kind of vibe.”

I let out a dry laugh at his words.

Isabella’s face was so gentle that his comment made sense.

At the same time, it showed just how foul my mood was.

“Where are Jessie and Blackie?”

“Jessie went out to buy dessert. Said it might help improve your mood or whatever. Blackie went out hunting.”

Normally, I would have gone hunting with Blackie too…

“Kkamang!”

“Why are you telling me not to follow?”

“Kkamang! Kkamang!”

“What, you think the bloodlust I’m leaking would scare the monsters off and ruin the hunt? Well, that’s… a fair point.”

So this time, Blackie decided to go hunting alone.

“So what happened to your face? Who ruined your mood?”

“Anyway, you’re late.”

I dodged Nigel’s question.

He raised an eyebrow at that but didn’t press further.

“Well, things just turned out this way. I had to get a replica so the Duke wouldn’t notice the necklace was missing. Anyway, here.”

Nigel handed me Daphne’s necklace.

It was sturdier than I expected. I had assumed it would be flimsy since Isabella supposedly broke it…

“Did Isabella try to smash this with a hammer or something?”

That’s how tough it looked.

The design, rough and plain, didn’t really match Daphne’s taste.

‘Definitely Ethan’s style.’

It must’ve been a gift from Ethan—something Daphne had treasured dearly.

I held the pendant attached to the necklace.

The oval-shaped pendant was adorned with several small gemstones.

“So this opens?”

“Yeah. Look carefully for a mechanism.”

Following Nigel’s instructions, I felt around the edge of the pendant and found a tiny groove.

When I pressed it, the pendant opened.

And then—

I froze at the sight of what was inside.

It was several strands of red hair, tied together with thread.

Judging by the short length, it looked like someone had cut it with a blade and kept it.

But more importantly—

“I didn’t know Daphne thought of me this way.”

I stared at the pendant with a mixed expression.

It was my hair.

I had expected something important to be inside the pendant…

I glanced at Nigel and said, “Maybe your rival wasn’t Ethan—it was me.”

“Bella. Cut the nonsense.”

“Mmm. I can’t return her feelings, though.”

“I said cut the nonsense.”

I caught the irritation in Nigel’s voice.

Better stop teasing before he actually gets angry.

Of course, I knew full well what I’d said was complete nonsense.

Daphne had Ethan. There’s no way she felt that way about me.

Still, one question wouldn’t go away.

I turned my gaze back to the pendant.

“Strange. That Daphne would keep my hair like this.”

I don’t even remember her taking it… well, I suppose she could’ve snuck a cut.

But why keep it here—so preciously, at that?
