Even I had to admit—the Celestial God was right.

Going to such lengths just because one human might be sad…

“Still, I couldn’t help it. I knew it wasn’t the wise choice, but I had no choice.”

I began to make excuses.

It’s not like I hadn’t agonized over it. For someone like me, who always saw the clear answers to every problem, Zachary was the first true dilemma.

I had extended the offer to make a contract first, and he had the audacity to refuse.

And then—

“Zachary, if you can’t stop the Demon God… then come to the Demon Realm with me.”

“Lady Bella, what do you mean by that…?”

“I can at least protect someone like you. Well, Ethan and Daphne and the fluffy too—”

“Lady Bella, I cannot go.”

“…Why?”

“If I stay and see those left on earth, I will be too sorrowful. I want to remain, to face the end with them.”

A defiant human who never once did what I wished.

And yet, for that human, I made this choice again.

At this point, I couldn’t deny it any longer—I was a fool.

A world-class idiot. A disgrace to the Demon Realm. Such titles suited me.

As my expression twisted, the Celestial God looked at me with pity.

“Whether demon, angel, or human… there comes a moment when we are all foolish.”

There was deep regret in his voice.

“And I am no exception.”

“What do you—”

“I cannot kill Morpheus.”

Emotion flickered across the Celestial’s face as he said those words.

Sadness.

He was mourning the fact that he could not bring himself to kill his own brother.

“My brother has long since lost his mind. The demonic energy consuming him only brings him pain with each passing day.”

But hadn’t he just said it?

That everyone has their moment of foolishness.

The Celestial God, having said that, smiled faintly. “Even knowing that death would bring Morpheus peace, I cannot kill him. It’s my selfishness—I don’t want to lose my brother.”

“Then you won’t stop the Demon God—”

The Celestial God cut me off. “And so, foolish demon… I too shall make a foolish choice, just like you.”

“……”

“My foolish and selfish wish for my brother to survive until the end. And at the same time, a choice that allows the children Aster left behind to escape ruin.”

At those words, my heart began to race.

Aster was the name of the Water God. And the children Aster left behind—were humans.

What the Celestial God was saying now…

“I cannot stop Morpheus. But you can.”

“That’s impossible. The gap in power between me and the Demon God is vast—uncrossable.”

“Then I will bridge that gap.”

“…How?”

“You are the demon of contracts. Let us make a contract.”

The Celestial God smiled at me.

Even though I had barged in and begged without warning, somehow it felt like he had been preparing for this moment for a long time.

“Through the contract, I will give you all of my power. And you will seal Morpheus. …A dreamless, endless sleep would be peace for him.”

“If you give me all your power, what will happen to you?”

“It’s time I went to see Aster,” he said with a faint smile.

There wasn’t even a hint of hesitation in his expression.

And so, I knew—the Celestial God was completely serious.

He was preparing to stake everything to seal the Demon God.

“Wouldn’t it be better if you did the sealing—”

“The only power I hold is that of life. I can create new souls, and that’s all. You, however, possess the Power of Contract. That is a power that can make even the impossible possible—so long as the price is paid.”

“It’s not that great a power…”

I mumbled in a small voice. Hearing the Celestial God describe the power I held like that made my ears burn.

To make the impossible possible. It sounded nice—but reality was different.

To fulfill the causal link and complete a contract, the price required was beyond imagination.

But if the full power of the Celestial God were offered in exchange…

I asked the power within me.

[With that power, is it possible to seal the Demon God?]

[Possible.]

The power within me answered.

At the power’s affirmation, my heart began to race.

I can stop the Demon God. Zachary won’t die, and there will be no need for grief.

I can protect my contractor.

With a flushed face, I looked at the Celestial God.

“You… thank you. Truly… thank you.”

“Young demon. You look better when you smile.”

At his words, I realized—I was smiling broadly.

The Celestial God approached and placed a hand on my head. “You always wore such a scowl that I thought you didn’t know how to smile. Even when you did smile at times, it never seemed sincere.”

“……”

“Seeing you smile like this… that human must be important to you.”

“…I suppose so.”

I replied in a small voice. I still wasn’t entirely sure…

“You demons lie far too often. So much that you even deceive yourselves. Sometimes, you need to be honest.”

Leaving those meaningful words behind, the Celestial God lifted his hand from my head.

The moment of the contract had arrived. The essence of a contract was in the exchange.

If the Celestial God gave me all his power, I had to pay the price he demanded.

Unless it was a contract bound by causality, the balance of the scales didn’t need to be exact.

As long as both parties agreed, a contract could be formed.

The Celestial God slowly began to speak.

“Then, young demon, let us form a contract now. I shall give you all of my power. In return, you shall…”

He paused briefly, then opened his mouth.

“Hold humans dear.”

“What kind of condition is that?”

I couldn’t understand what he meant.

With a smile on his face, the Celestial God answered, “Just what I said. I want you to cherish humans. To… yes, love them. I hope you will love them.”

“…That’s impossible.”

Even at this point, he spoke in contradictions.

I wanted to bite my tongue. The emotion he called love was far too heavy for me to acknowledge.

“Don’t think of it in grand terms. Just, like now. Or even if you come to hate humans… as long as you can hold them dear, even a little.”

The Celestial God smiled gently.

Just as he said, this was a contract that posed no harm to me.

Because his request was simple.

‘I won’t come to hate Zachary, after all.’

And so, I formed a contract with the Celestial God.

The moment I received all of his power, he vanished without a trace.

“……”

For a moment, I stared at the now-empty interior of the shrine.

A foolish god. And a foolish me.

I turned and left that place behind.

***

“Saintess.”

Kayden’s voice calling me brought me out of my recollection.

The contract I made with the Celestial God five hundred years ago was still valid.

In truth, I thought the contract would break the moment Zachary betrayed me.

But contrary to my expectations, the contract held.

That was probably because of—

Bella, don’t hate humans.

—Ethan’s final will before he died to save me.

Because I couldn’t bring myself to hate even Ethan, the contract managed to survive.

The problem was, I didn’t know how much longer it would last.

With time, the contract had begun to weaken.

Unless the wound from Zachary’s betrayal healed, the contract would eventually break.

The power maintaining the Demon God’s seal now was what I received from the Celestial God.

If the contract with the Celestial God broke, I would lose that power, and the Demon God would be released from the seal.
