At my threat, the angels glanced at one another, then fell silent.

I spoke with one corner of my mouth lifted, “Seriously, you lot are utterly insolent. From now on, don’t speak formally to Belial.”

Letting those arrogant angels off with just this? How merciful of me.

“You don’t seem all that merciful, Bella… but well, it’s not a hard request, so I’ll go along with it.”

The male Jen continued, “So about a thousand years ago? Belial had a human lover.”

“They were passionately in love. Belial, the Lord of Lust, actually held a wedding ceremony.”

The two Jens took turns telling the story.

At the word ‘wedding,’ I raised an eyebrow.

Weddings were a human tradition, something that existed only in the Middle Realm, not the Demon Realm.

For a lord of the Demon Realm to go that far for a mere human…

I frowned. If it were me… unless I completely lost my mind, I’d never do such a thing.

Amon had once told me about Belial’s ‘human lover.’

At the time, I doubted it—but if even these two knew, it must’ve been true.

“But what made their romance famous is the ending.”

“The ending?” I asked.

The female Jen explained, “Belial killed his lover with his own hands. It’s so infamous in the Celestial Realm that hardly anyone doesn’t know.”

“Huh? This is the first I’ve heard of it.”

I tilted my head.

Belial—wasn’t he the kind of idiot who’d just grumble for a bit even if I bit him?

For a demon, Belial was relatively gentle.

He didn’t seem like someone who’d kill his lover with his own hands. More than that, I didn’t think he’d ever seriously take a lover at all.

The female Jen added, “I heard that the incident was banned from being mentioned in the Demon Realm. It was an order from the Demon King herself.”

Hmm.

No matter how I thought about it, Belial didn’t seem like the type—but these two had no reason to lie to me.

Now that I thought about it, I only knew what Belial was like now.

The Belial of the past… might have been a completely different kind of demon.

As I remained silent, the female Jen shared her thoughts. “Anyway, even though it ended in tragedy, if he went so far as to hold a wedding, he must’ve really loved his partner.”

She even looked a little pleased with herself as she said that.

I looked at her with suspicion. “What exactly are you trying to say?”

“That Bella, you’re wrong. Lords can feel things like love.”

I glanced at the angels and said, “I didn’t realize that was such an important issue for you.”

“You should try falling in love too, Bella. Who knows? Maybe it’ll soften your personality.”

I shot a glare at the male Jen.

How dare he speak to me like that?

Was it because they were Gabriel’s underlings? They didn’t seem all that afraid of me.

Or… am I not intimidating enough?

I considered that thought for a moment, then dismissed it.

I’m the Lord of Contracts—there’s no way I’m not threatening. Let’s just say these two angels are too bold for their own good.

I glanced at them and said, “Let me rephrase. A lord must not fall in love—unless you’re looking for a complete catastrophe.”

Thud!

I closed the book in my hands with a loud snap, then asked them a question.

“Jen and Jen. How long is your lifespan?”

“Uh… for angels born with our level of divine power, it’s usually about two thousand years. So, around that.”

“Those who possess power have no end to their lifespan.”

Unless something else causes their death, they won’t die from age.

The body may endure the passage of time, but the mind often cannot.

The more one’s mind wears down, the greater the risk of being overtaken by demonic energy.

That’s why lords avoid anything that would wear down their mind too quickly.

Like forming deep relationships with others.

“Even making a friend requires serious resolve. If that friend were to suddenly die…”

Boom!

I made an exaggerated sound effect with my mouth.

A lord of the Demon Realm, consumed by grief and weakened in spirit—if they were completely overtaken by demonic energy, it would only lead to disaster.

They’d lose their reason and become a being that sought only death, destruction, and slaughter.

And if even friendship required such caution… love?

“Do you bastards want to see the world burn?”

At my explanation, the angels’ faces began to pale.

They hurriedly spoke one after another.

“Now that I think about it, emotions like love are totally pointless.”

“Right. Love has no place in Bella’s life. Don’t even think about it, Bella. Instead of love, how about walking the path of domination? Train your strength, and rise to become the Demon King!”

“The path of domination… I like the sound of that. Bella? You do know emotions like love are a luxury on that path, right?”

Their attitudes flipping like a switch was so ridiculous, I burst out laughing before I knew it.

“……”

Seeing me laugh, Jen and Jen exchanged glances.

The male Jen asked me, “Miss Demon? Could you laugh again?”

“What nonsense are you spouting now?”

“There’s something we need to check.”

Curious how far they’d take it, I smiled at them.

Then the two tilted their heads and began talking.

“Tch. It’s not the same as before. Jane, did we imagine it?”

“That smile just now wasn’t genuine. But the one earlier… it looked just like—”

“Looked like? Who do I look like?” I asked them.

The female Jen answered my question, “Ah, Lord Gabriel. When you laughed earlier, for a second, I saw Lord Gabriel’s face in yours.”

“What a disgusting thing to say.”

I sneered at them for spouting such nonsense.

Since I’m trapped in Isabella’s body right now—those two just said Isabella looked like Gabriel.

Gabriel, with his face that clearly screams mean and ill-tempered.

Isabella, on the other hand, has a very gentle-looking face.

How could the two possibly look alike?

“Not in appearance… but the way you smiled.”

“Yeah. Not your looks now, Bella. Just the smile.”

The two angels kept running their mouths.

Looks like I underestimated them.

They knew exactly how to provoke a demon.

***

I changed the subject.

I had nothing else to do for the time being, and I figured it wouldn’t be a bad idea to extract some information about Gabriel from his underlings.

“Gabriel’s lackeys. What kind of person is your master?”

To me, Gabriel was a petty and despicable creature.

Just because I became the new master of the Contract, he harbored murderous intent toward me.

But his subordinates might see him differently.

The male Jen was the first to speak.

“Lord Gabriel is… always perfect.”

Hmm?

From the female Jen’s hesitant voice, I could tell her true thoughts were different.

“Perfect? Are you serious?”

“Lord Gabriel is a perfect being.”

The male Jen repeated himself like a parrot.

I curled one corner of my mouth and said, “So that ‘perfect’ bastard ordered you to kidnap a child.”

“Well, Bella, you aren’t exactly an ordinary child… I mean, I have no excuse for that part. But Lord Gabriel probably just wanted to have a conversation with you.”

“Does pretending to be stupid make you feel better?”

What ridiculous nonsense. As if Gabriel just wanted to talk.

I sneered openly at the two.

Then the female Jen hesitated briefly before speaking, “Bella. Can you keep what I’m about to say a secret?”

“You expect that from a demon? Was it your head that got injured, not your wing?”

“…Wait a minute. If you knew I was the one with the injured wing… then that means you can tell us apart, Bella!”

“You sure waste a lot of attention on unimportant things.”

“That’s only unimportant to you—ugh, whatever. You don’t seem like the kind of demon who goes around blabbing, so I’ll just say it.”

The female Jen continued, “Lord Gabriel… hasn’t been himself lately.”

“Not himself?”

“He’s completely different from when Lady Uriel was alive.”

The male Jen added, “Well, those two were basically married, so it’s not that strange.”

“Married?”

I fixated on that word.

Just like marriage is a human concept, so is the idea of being husband and wife.

“You’re telling me those two were doing human things?” I said with a scowl.
