“You are more beautiful, intelligent, and wise than anyone I’ve ever known. Honestly, I must have been a fool. To have a woman like that as my wife and not realize how blessed I was,” Ethan said with a bitter smile, sounding self-deprecating.

“…That’s not true.”

At my words, Ethan slowly shook his head.

“It’s a fact. And like I said, you can’t move forward without acknowledging your mistakes.”

His words reflected his upright nature—almost to the point of perfectionism.

“From your perspective, it might seem ridiculous for me to say this now, but… I want to become true husband and wife with you. A real family. Just as we vowed on our wedding day five years ago—but failed to keep. To love and cherish each other until death…”

Ethan looked into my eyes, his voice low and steady. In those calm, luminous eyes, I saw the swell of sincere emotion.

He reached out and took my hand. His palm, slightly damp with sweat, told me how nervous he was.

“I love you. As my wife, as a woman. As the partner I want to spend my life with.”

“…Ethan.”

“I promise. If you can forgive me, I’ll never make you sad again. I won’t let you regret this.”

“……”

I looked at Ethan in silence. A wave of emotions surged within me, so tangled and overwhelming that I couldn’t find the words to reply.

Ethan had always struggled to express his true feelings. He was never one for eloquence, especially in matters of the heart.

So it wasn’t hard to imagine how long he must’ve wrestled with himself before saying these words to me today.

He looked at me like a man awaiting judgment.

At first, I never even dared imagine a day like this would come.

Of course, I had read the original story. I knew Ethan’s cold and indifferent exterior hid a warm heart.

I knew he was someone capable of deep, unwavering love.

But I thought the one who would receive that love would be his adopted daughter, Elodie—not me.

Yet just as Ethan had come to hold me as someone special, I too had developed the same feelings for him. From the moment his gaze and demeanor toward me began to shift…

No. It began even before that. I had already been drawn to him.

Even back when we constantly clashed and bickered, part of me hadn’t entirely hated it.

Those moments when, in the middle of arguing, our bodies suddenly brushed.

When we realized we were so close that we could feel each other’s breath.

When I found myself unable to look away from the heat in his eyes as he stared down at me.

Maybe, everything had already begun back then.

As Ethan anxiously waited for my answer, he finally opened his mouth again.

“You don’t have to answer right away. If you’re not ready yet, I’ll wait. As long as it takes…”

“No. That’s not it. I…”

For some reason, my throat tightened. Looking down, I spoke in a hushed voice, “…So, Ethan. I…”

Ethan’s grip on my hand tightened. I squeezed it back and said, “…I feel the same way, Ethan.”

Ethan’s eyes widened. “You… forgive me?”

I nodded.

To be honest, from my perspective, there wasn’t really anything to forgive. But I still nodded—because I knew that was what Ethan needed.

“Let’s do our best, together. Like you said, let’s try to become a true couple.”

“……”

Emotion softened Ethan’s eyes. He stood and came closer. I rose to my feet as well. We embraced and kissed.

Our breaths mingled, lips meeting again and again. The rising heat swelled within me. I wrapped my arms around Ethan’s neck, pressing myself against him.

As he gently brushed my cheek and hair, the kiss deepened—until he suddenly broke away, burying his face in the curve of my neck.

“…Mm…”

Without realizing it, a sound escaped me. As Ethan’s tongue traced over my sensitive skin, a shiver ran down my spine. I shrank back slightly and clung tightly to him.

Ethan kissed my neck over and over as if stamping a seal. His lips traced along my neckline, then sucked hard. There was a sharp sting, but surprisingly, I didn’t dislike it at all.

“Ethan…”

I unconsciously murmured his name. At that, Ethan raised his head. His eyes were burning with heat as he looked at me, then suddenly lifted me into his arms.

Still holding me, he carried me to the bedroom and laid me on the bed, climbing on top of me.

His shadow completely enveloped my body. I could hear the pounding of my heart echoing in my ears.

I stared up at Ethan, holding my breath.

A crease formed between his brows. With a faint, crooked smile, he asked, “Are you looking at me like that on purpose?”

“Huh? What do you mean?”

“That look in your eyes—like you’re tempting me.”

“T-tempting you…? I wasn’t doing anything of the sort. I was just looking without thinking.”

Flustered, I protested. Ethan let out a short laugh.

“Then I guess I’m just crazy about you.”

“……”

I unconsciously swallowed. Ethan took off his shirt. His well-sculpted upper body, so familiar now, came into view. He sat me up and began removing my dress. He was faster than any of the maids who usually helped me, peeling away the layers with practiced hands.

Soon, I was completely bare. I crossed my arms, trying to cover my chest as I looked away from Ethan.

He took my arms—but didn’t force them away. Instead, he kissed my cheek lightly and whispered into my ear.

“Show me.”

“…What?”

“Lower your arms. I want to see you.”

Ethan’s lips stayed pressed to my ear as he whispered. The deep, intimate tone of his voice sent chills down my spine.

He gently rocked my arms, as if knocking on a door. Biting my lip, I slowly lowered my arms. Ethan’s hands followed mine, guiding the motion.

Wherever his gaze landed felt as if it was being seared by candlelight. Blushing furiously, I squeezed my eyes shut.

“…Beautiful.”

Ethan murmured. It wasn’t flattery—it sounded like a genuine impression.

My already flushed face grew even hotter.

Ethan kissed my shoulder with a reverent tenderness, as if he were facing something sacred.

He laid me down again and began kissing all over my body. As if determined not to leave a single spot untouched.

I was overwhelmed by sensations and excitement I had never known before. Every time his lips touched a new place, I gasped and let out soft, trembling sounds.

Ethan paid careful attention to each reaction, sometimes gentle, sometimes so intense it bordered on rough.

By the time he lifted his lips from me, my entire body felt like it had melted.

Breathing heavily, I looked up at him through half-lidded eyes.

He brushed aside my damp hair and asked, “Are you okay?”

The meaning of the question was obvious. I nodded slowly. Ethan removed the rest of his clothes and came over me.

***

It was a long, long night. As if making up for all the time we had lost, Ethan held me again and again.

I had always been confident in my stamina. Camille’s body was naturally healthy, and I had made a point to stay active—riding, training—partly as a way of cherishing what I hadn’t had in my past life.

But even with that, keeping up with Ethan was exhausting. Of course, I hadn’t fully recovered from the accident yet, but even accounting for that…

I used to think it was an exaggeration when novel heroines collapsed after a night of passion. I’d thought, ‘Come on, it’s not like the woman does all that much physical work.’

But now I knew.

Just feeling something could drain all your strength.

Ethan finally let me go only at the break of dawn. Resting my head on his arm, I fell into a deep sleep, as if I had passed out.
